Bicycle Ride to Promote Sustainable Travel
In order to promote Sustainable Travel in North East India, an organization is forming called – North East Sustainable Network (NESN). This is to be a group of people who choose to be part of the NGO and who are truly interested in the concept of Sustainable Travel with sensitivity to Culture and Environment of the Area. In this effort Cultural Pursuits with James Perry is planning a bicycle ride from Baluckpong (Arunachal Pradesh) to Tawang. This is a personal challenge for James. Along with this challenge we are taking the opportunity to promote Sustainable Tourism with the bicycle being the symbol. The effort to cycle from Balukpong to Tawang on a bicycle is symbolic of Sustainability – it will not be possible to do if a person goes too fast at anytime without taking the challenge of the elevation and the distance into consideration will not be able to complete the challenge. Just as looking at Travel and tourism in a short term perspective, the model will not sustain itself. We must look at the overall scene and develop it accordingly. The Baluckpong to Tawang challenge will start on the Full Moon in November 2008; that is NOVEMBER 13th, it will be done by James Perry as a personal challenge. However as a lead up to this there will be two bicycle rides that will take place. In these rides any are welcome to join – however it is at their own expense and risk. The first ride will take place on Sept 27 which is World Tourism Day, which has its theme this year as “_______”. Along this theme a bicycle ride to promote Sustainable Tourism is appropriate. Logistics of Ride: The ride on the first day will be from Shillong to Mawphlang. There will be an effort to get as many participants as possible for this section. On the first night an opportunity will be given for camping and a gathering at Mawphlang (this is about a 25km ride). Do join us – please call James at 94363 03978 for details. This is not a ride for profit, however all expenses of individuals should be covered by the individual. For those more enthusiastic and fit the ride will continue on the 28th, 29th, & 30th to West Khasi Hills and on to Garo Hills with the final goal of reaching Tura. CONTACT us for details
