General Information about Khasi Culture/Stories/Folklore

 CAMPING AND TREKKING IN NORTH EAST INDIA:

1. MEGHALAYA - many options are available for trekking in Meghalaya - fewer and fewer villages use the old paths that connect them, yet still there are many that are there - from short hikes from one village to another - to high demand treks up and down steep slopes - There is so much of beauty and Culture to experience.  Garo hills is ideal for hiking and trekking, Balpakram National Park and Nokrek Biosphere are ideal - or just go from one village to another.

Here is one example:  With our first Base in Mawphlang near the Khasi Sacred forest start our hike on the David Scott Trail (old British horse and buggy trail) .. cross the main Shillong Cherapunjee Road and go down to Wahkhen and have some Khasi Drum Lessons .. then continue our trek from there through a village where each person is known by their own unique sound or song, parents can call out and the children recognize it from far off, continue our trek through deep valley on to Cherrapunjee and down to the border of Bangladesh.

ARUNACHAL PRADESH - There are so many options in Arunachal Pradesh,  many of the villages are connected by paths that are ideal for hiking, and staying in villages - most routes are not organized and set up, which makes it more authentic and enjoyable.  But slowly the routes are and will be developed:

NAGALAND;

there are many options for trekking in Nagaland, some great areas in Mon District along the Burma border that are not listed in most guide books to the ones that are listed: LIKE

Japfu Peak - just 15 km from Kohima is the Japfu Peak (3043 m); not much fruther away, 25 km from kohim, lies the Dzukou valley (2462 m).  Its face covered with the tough bamboo brush which makes it look like a mowed lawn, is watered by a stream which often freezes in the winter.  In the spring, the valley becomes a riot of wildflowers and rhododendrons, lilies, euphorbias, aconitums and hundreds of other species of plants.  The Dzukou Valley is one of the best trekking spots in North East India, if you are mainly into only nature.

Another sub-tropical area is Dzulekie forests, 40 km west of Kohima and lying at an altitude of 2133 m. 

Itanki wildlife Sanctuary, 111 km from Kohima and 37 km from Dimapur, is a wonderful treasure-house of exotic widlife.
