Phallic Rocks

The Legend of the Phallic Rocks - I have kept this written closely to the original given to me - written by  Manosh Marak - Nokma (Chief) of Resu Village East Garo Hills.

The Rocks

In the ancient land of Garos there are many  structures attached with legends handed over from one generation to another by way of spoken words only.

According to one such legend there was a saint.  The saint was forbidden by the gods to enter the area of a sacred forest where fruits were abundant.  The saint was warned by the gods if he ever entered the sacred forest he would suffer from unusual growth of his body parts.

Once there was a great drought and there was scarcity of food everywhere. In the villages people died due to starvation.  The entire village’s children, women and men suffered from starvation.  The villagers went to the saint for help as the saint had solutions for their every problem.  The saint being kind hearted could not bear to see the misery of the ordinary people.

To save the people from starvation and misery, he decided to enter the forbidden sacred forest where the fruits were abundant throughout the year.

It was already dark when he set out for the forest. As he went there alone, only with a dog for his company, he could carry very little fruits for the starving people.  He had to enter the sacred forest several times throughout the night to collect fruits to feed the large number of starving people. Each time he entered the sacred forest, which was forbidden, his penis grew long and big.  Each time it grew after collecting enough fruits he chopped off his elongated penis and left, when he left it, it became stone.  The detached part also continued to grow big.  Finally just before dawn he entered the sacred forbidden forest once again and never came back.  All the detached parts at different stages of growth and size became stone when the morning sunlight fell over them.

The forbidden sacred forest also wilted away.  Now only some jungle forest and the stone structures are seen.
