Tawang Bike Challenge

Fall 2008:

 Join me on a challenge to do a Bicycle ride from Balukpong (border of Assam and Arunachal) to Tawang in 2 days.

2 days This is about 285 km of riding from 213 metres sea level up to a top height of 4200. metres at Sela Pass and the down again to 3300. m at Tawang.  The ride will most likely take place in October of 2008.  Any are welcome to join in or join a supported bike tour up, which will take total of 6 days with 3 days in Tawang area enjoying villages and relaxing.  Below is the itinerary for the relaxed tour.  

the 2 day challenge is more simple - Get up early on first day ride as far as possible within reason till night fall, spend the night in Dirang or Bomdilla.  Second day up early in the morning and finish the trip to Tawang.

Duration: 12 Days

Difficulty: tough - high elevation and steep ascents and descents.

Included: Support Vehicle (pickup for bikes and Car/Van for people)

Food/Cook, lodging, water and snacks,

Village Stays and Rest Houses, Tours of Monasteries and a general

good time.

Not Included: Your Bicycle (you bring your own), special drinks or

foods, flights and tips.

Tour Price: Rs. 35,000. or approximately 900. US - however we always

go by the Rupee as we are operating in India.

Day 1:  Pickup in Guwahati and Drive to Balukpong. (evening and night in Balukpong tourist lodge.

Day 2: Ride from Baluckpong (213 m / 699 ft) to Rupa - Rupa is 67 km from Balukpong and lies at an elevation of 1408m / 4618 ft (night in Rupa Circuit House)

Day 3: Rupa to Dirang - steep climb to Bomdilla (2217 m 7274 ft)- 33 km - then down and slight up to Dirang (elevation 1497 m / 4910 ft) for total of 75 km. Night in Hotel Dirang

Day 4: Rest day around Dirang and visit to village and Monastery. Night in Hotel Dirang.

Day 5: Those who wish to take the challenge will ride to the top of Sela Pass (Elevation 4,200 m / 13,700 ft). Dirang to Sela Pass is 58 Km.  Others can ride as far as they wish and get pickup by vehicle. Tough Climb

Day 6: Rest day in Senge

Day 7: Sela Pass peak  (Elevation 4,200 m / 13,700 ft) to Tawang (3300 m / 10000 feet) distance is 78 km - both riding and by vehicle.

Day 8: Rest Day in Tawang.

Day 9: Visit and Stay in Village and dip in Hot Spring for the sore muscles.

Day 10: Rest and relaxation visiting areas around village.

Day 11: Drive out to Balukpong.

Day 12: Drop off in Guwahati.
